Mar 17, 2020 For example, CDC's latest data shows the cumulative hospitalization rate for the flu so far this season is 61.6 per 100,000 people, compared with 43.3 per 100,000 at the same point last season. Transcend: Best of “In the Round”
NOVEMBER 8th-10th | N.E.W. EXPRESSIVE WORKS

Performing in-the-round has resulted in some signature works for PDX Contemporary Ballet, and we have New Expressive Works (N.E.W) to thank for that. At roughly 35’ x 35’, the space naturally lends itself to an in-the-round seating configuration, through which the company has inadvertently learned the magic of presenting dance with 360 degree views for the audience. This show will feature excerpts from two full length works from the past: “Incipio”, the company’s very first performance at N.E.W., and “Configure”, a show inspired by sculpture.

ORIGIN: Humble Beginnings
february 21st-23rd | BodyVox Theater

Little known fact: Five years ago, this company had its first home in a church basement. As an ode to those humble beginnings, this show will bring back some of the very earliest choreographic works – some of which have not previously been performed outside the church underground. ORIGIN will also include the piece “Continually Beginning,” which serves as a reminder that we are never far from our roots.

ARISE: What Dance Could Be
May 22nd-24th | Bodyvox theater

Along the course of a journey that began in 2015, the company developed the vision and values that would define it. First and foremost, it is a place where dancers of all healthy body types are welcome and empowered for who they are. It is also a place where dance is approached with no preconceived ideas of what it “should be” but rather what it “could be.” The works presented in the season’s closing show have been selected as a showcase of these values, and include pieces with thought-provoking political undertones.

20192020

“Life after 50” could be a challenge for some, but not for VocalEssence! We are moving from one anniversary to the next. This season marks 30 years since we began our VocalEssence WITNESS program honoring the contributions of African Americans to the arts. We are celebrating with two WITNESS-themed performances this season—What a Mighty God in November featuring Dr. André Thomas and Deep Roots in February showcasing homegrown talent.

In Divine Light, our Ensemble Singers are celebrating exquisite chamber music from around the world. Welcome Christmas will feature a premiere by Norway’s hot young composer, Kim André Arnesen, commissioned in honor of the 125th anniversary of Sons of Norway. We will end the Concert Series with The Mendelssohns, an exploration of the music of sibling musical geniuses Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.

2019-2020 Season

This is the year to experience the Together We Sing Festival! It’s a free event all about bringing our community together to sing and give back. Save the date for our spectacular VocalEssence Gala on May 17, 2020, and watch for information about our Get Minnesota Singing Tour next April and May 2020.

Our inaugural Family Series last season was a huge hit! This season Tales & Tunes celebrates National Literacy Month and we are welcoming an acclaimed author to join us in this musical story time. Star of Wonder has become Winter Wonder, and we have added a third performance at Mia. To warm you up in the midst of winter, we are journeying to Polynesia for a Moana Movie Sing-Along in February at the American Swedish Institute. VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! Community Concert returns to the Ordway, and we end the season with our radically diverse youth choir VocalEssence Singers Of This Age in their pre-tour concert Voices Calling.

Join us in song. Together we sing, and you are a key part of our chorus.
